He’s worse than Bush when it comes to wanting control, only he wants it over American businesses and wants to shut down wall street.
Also, take out the part about cameras in bathrooms and stuff, those aren’t set up by the government, but rather the store the bathroom is in so that’s different.
I read most of what you wrote, but it’s so much, I skimmed the rest.
Anyway, what I remember of the book that compares to real life is the fact that under George W. Bush, our government now has the right to wire tap phones and access our Internet search logs in the name of stamping out terrorism and/or child pornography.
While I fully support both of those goals, I object to the way in which the government is going about getting this information and how much information they are learning about us that is really none of their business. Nothing we search for online is prohibited to their eyes. What then can they do with this information? Thanks to all of this, the door to a mindless nation under constant scrutiny has been cracked open. One more catastrophe and the door will be blown apart and nothing we do will be safe from prying eyes.
Also, there are rumors that much of the war in Iraq was conducted just so our country could gain control of the oil reserves in their country. The excuse we used was because the govt thought they had WMDs, but none were found. How many other things in the past fell under this same category?
Another thing, our government is too much in the business of the personal relationships of other countries and their morals and beliefs. For instance, Bush the 2nd refused to give aid to many nations in aids-afflicted peoples in African nations because those nations wanted to distribute condoms. Bush’s policy was to advocate abstinence only, trying to force people to not have sex or he wouldn’t send the money they needed for medical services for people who already had AIDS. So in essence, he’s using his own views and forcing them on a nation of desperate people who are dying and leaving their children without parents or food or a home…just so he can push his own agenda.
Whether you agree or disagree, a government that tries to control that much of a person’s life is pretty 1984 to me.
Also, you might want to mention the explosion of video cameras everywhere that watch what people do on a regular basis, some of them online where people all over the world can watch what you’re doing on live cams. While some of these cameras are fun for some of us and others are helping solve crimes, who knows what others are being used for?
BTW, govt’ owning companies means the govt controls the companies in one form or another. How much control will they have over every aspect of your life after that, knowing what you do before during and after work, what you eat, who you talk to, etc.? I kind of think we’re in the set up phase, but I also think that 1984 is coming.
As for the article, I’m not sure if that’s a good example of the 1984 risk we’re running, but again, the govt is exerting a lot of control over the companies now, and it all started because of idiots who make bad decisions that impact those who have no power to fix or control it…just suffer by it.
